Pest Control

Winter Pest Outlook for South Portland

Here in Maine, winter is one of our best kept secrets. With summer in the rearview mirror, and winter quickly approaching, the temperatures are beginning to drop, the vacationers are heading back home, and extra layers of socks are becoming the norm. The weather may be cold, and the sun may be scarce, but there is no shortage of enjoyable activities. Winter in Maine means skiing, snowshoeing, snowy coastal views, holiday festivals, brisk beach strolls, and warm toddies by a crackling fireplace.

Maine is known for its four distinct seasons. Whether you’re on a sail boat feeling the spring breeze or enjoying ocean views during the summer, each season here in Maine has its own unique set of circumstances. However, not all are as charming as the vibrant fall foliage.

In addition to the changing scenery, four distinct seasons also means four different pest seasons. It’s easy to think that once the temperature drops, so does the pest population, but unfortunately pests do not go away at any point during the year. They are a year-round concern, with each season bringing a different prominence of pests.

Pests love moisture and thrive off the heat, so spring and summer are their most prevalent seasons. As life blossoms in the spring, pests find their ideal habitats in gardens, grass, and shrubbery. Most pests, such as termites, flies, ticks, bees, and mosquitoes begin to forage for food when the weather is warm.  This prepares them for the cold winter months to come.

As temperatures drop, pests start seeking a warm and safe place to hibernate for the season. That’s where your cushy house comes in. Pests are likely to seek shelter inside your house, finding refuge in walls, basements, and crawlspaces. We may not need to worry about getting mosquito bites after October, but we certainly need to be wary of mice, squirrels, and other rodents that are desperate to get into our homes.

The most popular winter pests are carpenter ants, bed bugs, mice, rats, cockroaches, spiders, and various wildlife. They are attracted to your home because it offers sources of shelter, warmth, food, and water. It’s an optimal place for pests to live during the winter months as they need protection from the harsh winter elements, and what could be more welcoming than the coziness of your house?

Mice and rats in particular seek out remote storage areas because it provides them with safety and solitude. Not only do they pose a variety of health risks by carrying parasites and spreading harmful bacteria, but they can also cause serious damage to the structure of your home. These pesky rodents infest your house from top to bottom, quickly chewing their way into sealed drawers, food surfaces, pantry shelves, and cabinets. They can damage wood, insulation, sheet rock, wires, and not to mention they leave their feces and urine everywhere they go. They love attics and garages, places that give them access to large scale damage of your home’s insulation. To determine if these pests are infesting your space, look out for gnaw marks, scampering noises, rodent droppings, or the smell of urine.

Carpenter ants, another popular winter pest, live in nests outside of your house, but they tend to go inside during the winter months for food, water, and a safe place to set up their colonies. Their abilities to destroy wood can pose a serious threat to your house. Similarly, termites are highly destructive and often cause extensive damages to your home’s structural integrity. They are known as the “silent destroyers” as they are skilled at avoiding detection for long periods of time. Keep an eye out for piles of wood shavings and listen for faint rustling sounds inside the woodwork and walls.

Bed bugs are also adept in staying elusive. They are small and nocturnal, only emerging from their hiding spaces to feed on human blood. They thrive in a cluttered space and love to lay their eggs in hidden creases. Watch out for red, itchy welts on your skin and little blood spots on your sheets.

Wildlife such as bats, raccoons, skunks, chipmunks, and squirrels will also seek a home inside to escape the cold. They often get into the attic, the chimney, under the deck or shed, spreading their feces everywhere and damaging the structure of your house with their teeth. Pay attention to any squeaking or scratching noises coming from the walls or attic, any sounds of rustling from under your home or deck, gnaw marks on electrical wiring or walls, and small feces droppings or odorous urine stains.

Year-round pest control is of paramount importance for residents of Southern Maine. A qualified pest technician can effectively and safely exterminate these intruders – that’s where we come in.

Maine Superior Pest Solutions is one of Southern Maine’s premiere exterminators. Our licensed experts inspect your home with you, educating you on the various methods that pests use to get inside your house, so you are knowledgeable of all entry points. We implement customized treatment plans based on the individual needs of each client. We eradicate the problem and address the damage with urgency and diligence.

In addition to providing yearly preventative maintenance visits, our team offers the best in pest control insulation. Whether you’re in need of a solution for bed bugs, carpenter ants, mosquitoes, ticks, termites, wildlife, or any other pesky pests that find their way into your home, Maine Superior Pest Solutions controls unwanted pests by identifying areas that harbor them. Isolating these areas allows us to eradicate the breeding site and control any larvae that may remain in the area. This prevents pests from spreading and taking up a long-term residence in your home.

From thorough inspection and precise identification, to expert recommendations on making your home less conducive to pest activity, we target the source and cut it off immediately. Maine Superior Pest Solutions offers habitat modification and exclusion services to prevent future infestation. We install chimney caps, roof vent guards, attic vents, and other preventative screens to establish a protective barrier between your home and the pests that want to get inside. You shouldn’t be worrying about intruders when there’s so much to enjoy this winter season.

The natural beauty of Maine is too spectacular to miss. Why waste your time aimlessly chasing pests when Maine Superior Pest Solutions is here to do it for you? We pest proof your home so you can enjoy all four magical seasons here in the beautiful state of Maine.

16 Celebs Who Went to Ivy League Schools

I’m sure the admissions officer at Dartmouth who stamped admitted onto Mindy Kaling’s application is sitting pretty watching “The Mindy Project” on demand and patting themselves on the back for being able to recognize greatness. Even if they accomplish nothing else in life, they can rest easy knowing they played some minor part in the success story of a real life celeb who is doing awesome things.

Ivy League schools are like the rich and famous of the university system, so it makes sense that many of Hollywood’s rich and famous were in attendance at these prestigious institutions. It’s a win-win. The school win’s because they get to add another famous name to their list of alums, securing their ever-growing reputation of artistic and financial success. The celeb wins because their reputation is appropriately fluffed with the elite glow of an Ivy League degree.

Also, through the admittance of celebs, the school guarantees a famous speaker for the commencement addresses of the future. It’s a good deal. Also, it’s pretty much guaranteed that they won’t need any financial assistance because I don’t think many celebs are concerned with paying off their student loans. Just a hunch.

Anyway, here are 16 celebs who roamed the ivy coated halls of the Northeast and graduated with some impressive degrees.

1. Emma Watson

Of course Hermione Granger ended up at an Ivy League school. She was the class know it all who had an answer for everything, so it’s only fitting. After enrolling at Brown University in 2009, Emma took advantage of the University’s open curriculum to take independent studies in subjects like philosophy and psychology. She took a leave of absence in 2011 to focus on wrapping up the Harry Potter series, but she returned to her studies and finally graduated in 2014. Rumor has it that in a big lecture hall, the Professor called on Emma to answer a question and when she gave the correct response a fellow student shouted out “10 points to Gryffindor!” to which she laughed like a good sport.

2. Mindy Kaling

Funny gal Mindy Kaling graduated from Dartmouth in 2001 with a BA in – you guessed it – theatre! In a piece she wrote for Seventeen Magazine last summer, she talks about what a refreshing change it was to go from high school, where her unique brand of humor wasn’t fully appreciated, to college, where she finally found a place for her comedic voice to grow and blossom. She took writing classes and joined an improv troupe, which all contributed to the confidence she needed to go on to write for and star in “The Office” and “The Mindy Project”.

3. Rashida Jones

This chick is killin’ it. She has new show called “Angie Tribeca” on TBS and has starred in a successful string of small screen and big screen comedies such as “The Office”, “Parks and Recreation”, and “I Love You Man”. Her famous parents Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton gave her a leg up on the Hollywood lifestyle, and after attending the Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California with the likes of Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, she made an impressive move to Boston where she attended Harvard University. Yea, Harvard. I just assumed that getting into Harvard wasn’t actually a real possibility in life, but I guess for Rashida it was. She graduated in 1997 with degrees in religion and philosophy, and she participated in the school’s theatre program as well as sang for the a cappella group, the Harvard Opportunes.

4. John Legend

I didn’t think John Legend could get any more amazing, but then I read that he graduated with an English degree from the University of Pennsylvania with an emphasis on African American literature, and my heart melted a little more. That velvet voice and brains, look out world – John Legend is just that, a legend. He even returned to his alma mater in 2014 to give the Commencement Speech and give a beautiful performance of “All of Me”. It was during his undergraduate years that a friend of his introduced him to Lauryn Hill who later hired him to play piano on her song “Everything is Everything”. His talent led the journey from that moment on, resulting in the amazing Grammy award-winning career he is continuing to build today.

5. John Krasinski

Another office alum who graduated from an Ivy League school in 2001! Like Mindy Kaling, Krasinski was an ivy-league student long before his days of fame. In fact, he wasn’t planning on getting into acting when he was studying for his undergraduate degree. He began with a concentration in English, after having spent his first semester in Costa Rica teaching (swoon). He went on to act in some theatre productions at Brown, his first part as a 6”3 transvestite in high heels. It was probably clear from that moment on that John Krasinski had a certain charm that needed to be shared with audiences all over the world.

6. Julia Stiles

After making a splash as Kat Stratford in the beloved 90’s teen flick “10 Things I Hate About You”, Julia Stiles took a detour from her acting career and enrolled in Columbia University. She graduated in 2005 with a degree in English, making her character Kat Stratford very proud, I’m sure. Rumor has it that during her freshmen year living in John Jay Residence Hall, she set her kitchen on fire. Oh, Julia! You are incorrigible. As if the rest of the student body didn’t already know who she was, I’m sure this incident put her on the map. Also, I like to imagine that Heath Ledger visited her on campus and performed his adorable number on the school bleachers with the CU marching band backing him up. And then they went to prom together and everything was rad.

7. James Franco

James Franco is like the energizer bunny. He just keeps going and going and I don’t think there’s any stopping him. After received a BA in English from UCLA, he went on to graduate from Columbia University in 2010 with an MFA in writing. He is currently enrolled at Yale University to get a PhD in English, not to mention he’s still acting, directing, and writing a number of his own film projects.

8. Elizabeth Banks

Elizabeth Banks is the coolest gal in the biz. She’s funny, beautiful, sweet, and she’s got brains to boot! She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 1996 with a BA in Communications. She went on to join the greek system as a tri-delt and she even met her husband, Max Handelman on the first day of classes freshman year.

9. Conan O’Brian

We may have our moments of pure hatred when it comes to Conan, but there’s no denying his undying work ethic and hunger for success. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1985 with degrees in History and Literature. During his undergraduate career, he wrote for the school’s humor magazine, The Harvard Lampoon and served as the publications president for his sophomore and junior years.

10.  Edward Norton

Our favorite tortured “Fight Club” star graduated with a BA in History for Yale University in 2001. During his undergraduate career he was a competitive rower and an active member of the drama department. He acted alongside Paul Giamatti and Ron Livingston in many shows at the University

11.  Ellie Kemper

Another Ivy League alum from “The Office”, Ellie Kemper, who starred as Erin Hannon, graduated from Princeton University in 2002 with a BA in English. Interestingly enough, she started her undergraduate career as a Freshman Varsity Filed Hockey Player, but later put the stick down to try her hand at comedy writing. Kemper’s mother also attended Princeton and was one of the first women to write for and perform in the school’s annual musical comedy, The Triangle show. So, following in her mother’s footsteps, Ellie took on comedy and went on the perform in The Triangle as well as the school’s improv troupe, Quipfire!.

12.  Jane Lynch

Jane Lynch is the best! With her new gig as the host of “Hollywood Game Night” on NBC, she is continuing to bring pride to her alma mater. After earning her undergraduate degree in acting from Illinois State University, she went on to study at Cornell University and finished in 1984 with a graduate degree in Theatre.

13.  Liev Schreiber

After receiving training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, this sexy man went on to study at the Yale School of Drama. He graduated with an MFA in 1992 and has since gone on to star in huge films like “Scream”, “The Manchurian Candidate”, “X-Men”, and “Salt”, among many others. Originally he wanted to be a playwright, but a teacher encouraged him early on to pursue acting - probably because he’s super hot and talented and it would have been a sin to hide him from the world.

14.  Anderson Cooper

This silver fox graduated from Yale University in 1989 with a degree in Political Science and has gone on to the top of the broadcast journalism world as the anchor of his CCN show Anderson Cooper 360. From a young age, he was driven by tragedy and loss. After losing his father and then his brother, he felt compelled to ask questions regarding survival – why did some survive and others don’t? It was this curiosity that led him to Southeast Asia with a video camera where he recorded notable footage that led him to his gig as international correspondent for Channel One. From there, his career took off, because of his big brains, blue eyes, and compelling narrative voice. Did I mention he’s a silver fox?

15.  Jenny Slate

Jenny Slate is my favorite human. She’s the hilarious voice of “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On”, and the brilliant mind behind “Obvious Child”. And even though her career on SNL didn’t pan out, I think the unique and unusual path she is taking to her comedic success is much more fitting to her idiosyncratic personality. She graduated from Columbia University in 2004 with a degree in literature and was a big participant in the school’s student-written and performed comedy, The Varsity Show, where she met her best friend and comedy partner Gabe Liedman.

16.  Donald Trump

I thought I’d throw a bit of curveball with this one. Donald Trump, the man who is no-joke in the running to become the next President of these here United States, is a graduate of an Ivy League School. He himself said, and I quote, “I went to the Wharton School of Business. I’m, like, a really smart person.” He graduated from UPenn in 1968 with a BA in economics and has said that he finished at the top of his class, although Wharton confirms that’s just a myth. He didn’t graduate with honors and he was accepted to UPenn after an interview with a friendly admissions officer who knew Trump’s brother. The unfair favoritism started very early on, apparently giving him reason to believe he’s like, really smart.

Travel

The Tzfat Chill

Located in Israel’s Northern Galilee region, Tzfat is a modest gem of a city filled with artistic minds, beautiful souls, and a magical holiness that saturates the air. The nature of the people and the sense of community are so mind-blowingly refreshing that even those visiting Tzfat for just the day are somehow warmed by its mysterious spirituality. So, it’s no wonder that after spending two months totally immersed in the magic, I feel forever changed by my experience.

Last summer, (2011), I visited Israel for the second time (after a successful trip the previous summer) and following a few weeks of travelling solo and exploring Jerusalem and Tel Aviv in the heart of the country, I hopped on a bus and rode for three hours to arrive in Tzfat (alternatively pronounced Safed, for those who don’t like too many consonants in a row.)

After lugging my bags across the cobblestone roads of Tzfat’s old city, I arrived at my destination, a quaint building in the artists’ colony with blue railings and a tall wooden door. I was immediately struck with the overwhelming human kindness that embodies Tzfat as my Program Coordinator helped me carry my suitcase up the stairs and into the Livnot U’Lehibanot campus.

Livnot U’Lehibanot is a non-profit organization that runs programs for non-affiliated Jews who are interested in exploring their heritage and their spirituality in an engaging and adventurous manner. Literally translated as “To Build and To Be Built”, Livnot U’Lehibanot concentrates on the development of community and the spiritual growth and awareness within each of its participants.

Along with a handful of other Jewish twenty-somethings from North America, I embarked on the four week Livnot program entitled, The Galilee Fellowship: four weeks of hiking, volunteering, learning, and hiking some more in a communal living environment filled with curiosity and open minds.

Our days were filled with honest discussions, community building, volunteering around the city, hiking various parts of the Galilee, celebrating Shabbat, and getting to know a part of ourselves that easily goes unacknowledged in the fast paced American lifestyle.

It was a chance to slow down, breathe and pamper your soul, to pay attention and feel, free your mind and open your heart. And when this is all happening in the mystical city of Tzfat, there’s no way to ignore life’s beauty.

The beauty of the land was also undeniable. We hiked several times per week, including a three-day-hike in which we walked the width of Israel to arrive at the Mediterranean Sea with a sense of triumph and inspiration that is impossible to convey in words.

I look back on it all and feel like it was some sort of dream. I was a more spiritual me and a more conscious being. That is, after all, the very mood that defines Tzfat, a place where mystical trumps rational and a beautiful sense of spirit is born.

The city is widely known for being the birthplace of Kabbalah, a mystical philosophy/school of thought within Judaism that focuses on the study of God’s essence and the infinite climb to higher consciousness and understanding. It’s insanely complex and inherently impossible to comprehend, which speaks to the undeniable mystical persona of Tzfat.

It’s impossible to understand everything, and that’s okay. A helpful lesson in life as well as in Kabbalah.

Most people hear Kabbalah and immediately think of the little red string bracelet that Madonna wears as an ode to her belief in the Kabalistic teachings. Whether Madonna is actually involved in the consuming study of Jewish mysticism is debatable, but anyone who knows Tzfat knows of the run down, stone building that Madonna wanted to purchase and renovate as her ornate dwelling of Kabalistic learning. The city of Tzfat denied her purchase of the property, anticipating all the unwanted publicity it would cause, and the house is now referred to as “The Madonna House”, an abandoned, two-story structure where many young people go to indulge in hookah, hash and meaningful conversation. It’s a beautiful place to enjoy the view of the mountains and stars, and feed the soul in the wonder of “The Tzfat Chill.”

My favorite part of Tzfat was the community-wide respect for the healing power of music. Every Friday, we would sit together in a circle and sing in such an uninhibited expression of spirit and joy, welcoming Shabbat and slowing down to appreciate our surroundings.

My friend David, a local student I met who was studying in Tzfat, and I would spend countless nights sitting on rooftops and humming tunes as he plucked on his guitar.

There was nothing better than walking through the square and running into the reggae master and guitar genius, Nissim, who would play till his fingers bled and spread the deliciousness of good music.

On Tuesday nights, there was a drum circle in Yahel Levy’s colorful African Art Gallery, and there I would sit, trying to keep a beat on the drum as David and Nissim jammed flawlessly into the night.

Completely enchanted by the people and the city, I wasn’t ready to leave after four short weeks. There was just so much to see. I wanted to have more time roaming the artists’ colony, appreciating the handmade jewelry, and negotiating a fair price.

So, I made a few calls and decided to stay for another four weeks. Somehow I knew that no amount of time would truly be enough to satiate my growing curiosity, but four weeks is what I got, and my journey continued.

One night I asked David what it was that made Tzfat so addictive. I wanted to know what spell I was under and how long it would last, but David was used to my verbal vomit by then and he simply told me that it was “The Tzfat Chill.”

That was all he really needed to say for me to understand. There’s something so peaceful about not knowing all the answers and being genuinely okay with that. “The Tzfat Chill” was this collective acceptance that no one knows everything and all we can do in this life is embrace the process, feed our souls and make beautiful music.

Weddings

Tossing The Bouquet

There are countless joys in planning (and attending!) a wedding, like the meaningful participation in age-old customs and traditions. The institution of marriage alone has been around for as long as history can recall, so it’s no wonder that a wedding involves a handful of classic rituals.

One such practice that has always intrigued me is the throwing of the bouquet. You know the scene: the bride is at her reception, facing her back to all of her single female guests who eagerly wait for her to toss the bouquet in the air. The flowers fly in slow motion as the women reach their hands out, shoving one another and keeping their eyes on the prize. Finally, one of them catches the bouquet, shrieks in excitement, and accepts a bunch of forced congratulations from the envious ladies who drag themselves back to their tables in defeat.

The custom suggests that the woman who catches the flowers will be next to wed, which might explain the eager batch of bouquet-hungry women who participate in the practice. But, the meaning of the climactic catch originates from the historic belief that the bride is saturated with good luck and fortune on her wedding day.

In 14th century Europe, guests were so enthralled with getting their share of this ethereal luck that is was customary to actually rip and tear at the bride’s dress, in hopes of taking home a physical piece of her, and sub sequentially some of her good fortune. However, the idea of people pulling and grabbing at a beautiful wedding dress is anything but ethereal. In today’s world, that just won’t do. While the modern day, fabulous bride may be all about sharing her luck with family and friends, there’s just no way that they’re getting near her Vera Wang with lace appliqué. Forget it.

So naturally, we’ve adapted. Cue the tossing of the bouquet. It’s a less messy way for the bride to share her luck with the guests. Plus, the dress stays safe.

Some couples include a garter toss, incorporating an actual piece of the bride’s clothing and staying in stride with the 14th century tradition. It’s customary for the groom to remove his bride’s garter and toss it to the single bachelors in attendance. The man who catches it is supposed to pair up with the woman who catches the bouquet, placing the garter on her leg to symbolize their newfound luck. That luck doesn’t necessarily mean another I do, but who knows, right? Maybe the garter catcher and the bouquet catcher hit it off and have a spring wedding in the works. Maybe not.

Regardless, it’s all about sharing the luck. A lot of couples completely toss out the idea of having a bouquet or garter toss at all. Some people worry that the bouquet toss uncomfortably isolates single people at the wedding. It’s a time to celebrate the beauty of true love and finding your soul mate, not a time to remind people of their loneliness. So, a common alternative to the bouquet toss is having a special song played by the band or DJ to honor those couples at the wedding that are already married. The song starts and all married couples are called to the dance floor. Slowly, couples leave the floor according to the number of years they’ve been married, in ascending order. The goal is that by the end of the song, the couple left dancing is to be revered as King and Queen of Marriage. They represent veterans of the married world, to be seen as an inspiration; the paradigm of what newly married couples hope to become: a loving partnership to last a lifetime.

There are so many special traditions to consider when it comes to the wedding. Age-old or brand new, they each have a special meaning to celebrate. Of course, every couple is unique and every wedding differs. In fact, perhaps the only true tradition consistently upheld in modern weddings is that no two ceremonies or receptions are exactly alike. The great freedom of the contemporary bride and groom allows them to celebrate in their own unique fashion, bouquet-toss or not.

Dressing for “I Do”

So, you’ve been invited to a wedding. Fun! The invitation is pinned on your bulletin board, the date is marked in your calendar and you can’t wait to celebrate. As joyful as this occasion is, there are still a lot of stress factors creeping their way into your head. As a wedding guest, there are a lot of considerations in preparation for the big day. Aside from getting the right gift, one of the most bewildering decisions to make is what to wear.

The old adage comes back to haunt us. A closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear! You don’t want to be overdressed, but you certainly don’t want to look like an underdressed chump amidst a crowd of fancy–shmancy partygoers. Despite the dress code printed on the invite, there are just so many options to choose from, so many aspects to consider. It’s overwhelming. It’s daunting. Maybe you’ll just stay home and watch reruns of The Bachelor instead.

That’s crazy! Of course you’re going to the wedding. It’ll be beautiful! You’ll dance, you’ll eat cake and you’ll have a fabulous time. Just take a deep breath and don’t panic. Look, there are worse things than feeling lost in a tornado of dress options. Playing dress up can be a blast, and with these helpful tips you’ll be able to decipher the dress code in no time.

First things first: look at the invitation. Most invites specify the dress code for their guests, giving them an idea of what to wear. Hear are the most popular types, from the most dressy to the most casual, and everything in between.

White Tie

I know what you’re thinking. What’s white tie? I thought the most formal attire was considered black tie. Well, black tie is the second most formal of dress codes. White tie is a step of elegance even above that. This is your chance to dress like the Queen of England, the upper class guests on the Titanic, an elite guest of the royal ball, etc. If you’re going to a white tie wedding, pull out all the stops: white gloves, regal jewels, detailed embroidery and coiffed hair. This is as fancy as it gets, so men wear tails and bowties, and women’s gowns are floor length and classy.

Just make sure not to wear anything that will outshine the bride on her special day. That means stay away from white and ivory, don’t wear a tiara or crown (or a veil, obviously) and make sure the dress’s circumference isn’t too statement making. Remember, the bride is Cinderella. You’re just there to celebrate her finding her prince.

Black Tie

If white tie is the Oscars, then black tie is the Golden Globes- still very fancy, but taken down a notch or two.  Men wear tuxedos, women wear elegant gowns or cocktail dresses, and small beaded or satin clutches are aplenty. Black tie usually implies an evening wedding (as does white tie) so rich fabrics and tasteful color palettes are encouraged. Basically, your outfit should probably be dry clean only or something you’d pack in a garment bag. No wrinkles, no stains, no rips or holes. Dress to impress, nothing less.

Formal/Black Tie Optional

“Black tie optional” and “formal” both mean the same thing. While you still want to keep things relatively fancy, there’s a little leeway with the specifics. Men don’t have to wear a tuxedo, although it wouldn’t be inappropriate. A dark suit and tie is completely acceptable. For the ladies, a floor length dress is still fitting, although a slightly shorter hem with a chic pair of heels also becomes an option here. A dressy suit can also work, as long as it doesn’t look like you’re heading to the office. You want to look put together. This is your chance to “clean up nice” as they say. So, use some hair product, do your makeup and channel your inner princess.

Semiformal/Dressy Casual

This is where things start to get tricky, where the lines begin to blur. Think of Goldilocks shopping for an outfit that’s “just right”- you don’t want to dress too casual, but you also don’t want to look too formal. The aim is to fall somewhere in the middle, keeping it dressy without standing out too much. That being said, a nice skirt or dressy pant with a chic blouse is acceptable, but men should still wear a jacket and tie.

The trick to cracking this dress code lies in the details of the event. Consider the location, the time of day and the season. This will determine whether you wear a lighter color or a darker hue, whether you opt for a heavier fabric like velvet or a more delicate one like silk or chiffon.

For example, lighter colors are more appropriate for a daytime wedding whereas darker, jewel shades may be more suited for a nighttime wedding. Similarly, a spring or summer ceremony is a better time for playful paisley and floral dresses, whereas a fall reception may lend itself more towards a hound’s tooth pattern or geometric print.

Casual/Informal

This is the most low-key of dress codes when it comes to attending a wedding. This by no means implies a free for all where you can roll out of bed in the morning, grab a coffee, and head to the ceremony. It’s still, after all, a wedding! You’ll be meeting new people, making first impressions, and very possibly sitting in some house of worship. So, just because the dress code is casual doesn’t mean that no rules apply.

Men should wear dress pants with a button down shirt or polo. Women can wear a dress, a skirt and blouse or even a nice pair of dress pants. There are several ways to interpret this level of attire, but stay away from anything floor length or bejeweled, as those generally read as more formal choices.

No matter what the dress code may be, there are certain “don’ts” that cannot and should not be broken. Jeans are never okay to wear to a wedding. They’re just not. The same goes for t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, etc. Basically, if it’s something you’d throw on to run errands, it’s not appropriate for a wedding.

Your outfit of choice should also stay modest. This means watch out for the cleavage and make sure the hemline is long enough to cover your thighs. There will be grandparents at this wedding. You’re not going clubbing. Remember that. Also, make sure to bring a shawl or pashmina to cover your shoulders during the ceremony, especially if you’ll be in a church or temple or some other conservative venue. Be respectful, be classy and be fabulous. If you remember this, you’ll be fine.

Dressing for a wedding doesn’t have to be a dizzying experience of confusion. If you possess an average amount of common sense, everything will be okay. So, RSVP yes to the wedding, follow these guidelines and dance the night away. There’s so much to celebrate!

The Bourbon King – Podcast Demo

[sounds of a single gunshot]

[V/O GEORGE REMUS] -

Lock me up. I’ve just shot my wife.

[NARRATOR] -

George held a pearl-handled pistol in his blood-covered hand, his white silk shirt covered in a thick coat of red. When he arrives at the police station, he gives his confession.

{V/O GEORGE REMUS] –

I will never forget her expression when I was pulling her to me, and she realized I had gotten her. She turned that hypocritical face to me and said, ‘Oh, don’t hurt me, Daddy, you know I love you.’”

[NARRATOR] –

George Remus murdered his wife, but that was merely a fraction of the man he was and the man he could become throughout his entire life. He was a pharmacist, a defense attorney, and one of the most notorious Prohibition era gangsters who would become known as the King of the Bootleggers.

George played fast and loose his entire life. He was born on November 13th, 1876 and to a poor German family. However, he wasn’t always so forthcoming with his birthyear. He would say it was sometime between 1874 and 1879, depending on whatever circumstances he was navigating at the time. That’s the type of man he was: strategic, convincing, and endlessly clever.

George and his family left West Prussia for a better life in America, traveling across the Atlantic on a passenger ship called the Fitlington to arrive in New York City in June of 1882. After a brief stint in Baltimore, the family moved to Milwaukee, a growing city with a rich German and Prussian heritage. They lost a baby to childbirth in 1884 and moved to Chicago for a fresh start. George was just eight years old. George’s father Frank was an abusive alcoholic. He couldn’t find a job, and the miniscule wages he did earn from occasional odds and ends jobs certainly didn’t go far. George Remus referred to his childhood as a hardship. He and his siblings were often left hungry, and as the eldest son, George felt the entire weight of his family’s financial burdens on his young shoulders.

{V/O GEORGE REMUS] –

I took hold of matters from the age of about 14 years and three months and assisted in supporting the family.”

[NARRATOR] –

He took on the guardian role and wrote his father off as an incompetent provider, something he vowed he’d never become.

Audio Narrative

Prompt: (Relationship) A couple going on a road trip is having an argument on whether they should have a baby or not.

Narrator: Nathan and Millie were heading upstate to visit Nathan’s sister and brother-in-law. It a was a long drive and neither of them had spoken for the last 10 minutes. They’d been arguing about their future and Millie requested a period of silence where neither of them were to say a word. Although it had only been 10 minutes, it felt like 2 hours and the thickness of the quiet was becoming unbearable. The radio was playing oldies and neither one of them could enjoy their favorite Van Morrison song when it came through the airwaves. Instead of suffering in this state of tension, Nathan decided to turn it off and try to make up

(sfx of the radio being turned down, and faint highway noises in the distance)

Nathan: (clears throat) Can we just… talk this out please?

Millie: I’m not really sure what more there is to talk about, but okay…

Nathan: Well, I don’t want to go through the rest of the night like this. I’d like to enjoy hanging out with my sister who I don’t get to see very often.

Millie: I’m not stopping you from having a good time with your sister.

Nathan: No, but this fight is making it hard for me to relax and think about anything else.

Millie: This didn’t have to be a fight, but you made it one.

Nathan: That’s not fair.

Millie: You’re the one who said you’re not going to wait around forever, that maybe you should find someone who definitely wants a family and who isn’t scared of the future.

Nathan: No, I said it can be frustrating to be with someone who is so scared of the future, and I said that having kids is becoming more and more important to me and I’m nervous you’re never going to feel the same way.

(sfx of multiple car horns and sounds of a car skidding on the road)

Millie: Nathan! Watch it!

Nathan: I’m fine! It wasn’t me, it’s that guy! He didn’t use his signal!

Millie: Okay, but you could’ve---

Nathan: Why is it always something I did, huh? You know it really doesn’t help when you yell out like that, it just makes me jumpier and make the whole thing worse.

Millie: Wow, sounds like I’m batting 100. Seems like I can’t do anything right by you.

Nathan: Yea, well I feel exactly the same. Like nothing I do is ever good enough.

Millie: What’s good enough is not bringing up kids every 5 minutes and giving me the time to process and think and feel before I decide I definitely want to do this permanent thing that I can never take back.

Nathan: I am patient, I just want to keep the dialogue open.

Millie: Well, your constant dialogue about having kids is giving me major anxiety and I’d appreciate it if you could just let me breathe.

Nathan: I just don’t understand. You have so much love to give and I know you’d be an amazing mother.

Millie: (sighs with frustration) It’s not like getting a dog, okay? It’s a human life! I’d be responsible for thrusting the burden of existence onto a poor innocent soul!

Nathan: We’d both be responsible.

Millie: That doesn’t make it any better! One day the kid will grow up and realize all the harsh realities of this world we live in. They’ll come up to you with wide eyes and ask, “why do so many bad things happen in the world”, or “why do I exist?” or some other question that I don’t have the answer to!

Nathan: You don’t have to have all the answers.

Millie: It’s just, I’m still trying to figure out myself. I’m still learning to stand on my own two feet and be an adult and it just feels like I’m not equipped to create a new life and then be responsible for how they turn out? Like what if they become a serial killer?! That’s always on the mother, you never hear the father get blamed for a kid becoming a murderer.

Nathan: Okay…. well, how about this? If our kid becomes a murderer, I will take full responsibility for it.

Millie: I don’t know.

Nathan: Look, no one has any idea what they’re doing, okay? We’re all just winging it, one day at a time. You think everyone who’s ever had kids felt fully prepared?

Millie: No, obviously not. But I don’t want to be irresponsible about this. Bringing a human into existence is a serious and irreversible thing. What if the kid wishes they didn’t exist? They’ll blame it all on us. I know I do that with my parents.

Nathan: Kids blame their parents for everything, that’s just how it is.

Narrator: Millie, unsure of what to say, turned the dial up on the radio to make the song louder.

(sfx of electric guitar)

Nathan was at a loss. They’d hit this wall so many times and it seemed like nothing he said or did helped. He didn’t know what to tell people anymore when they asked him why they weren’t married yet or when he was gonna settle down and have kids. He loved Millie, but he couldn’t help but wonder – was love really enough?

Millie: Is it cool if I open the window?

(sfx of window opening and sounds of the wind and highway getting louder)

Nathan: (yelling over the noise) Can you close it?? It’s hurting my ears!

Millie: (sighs)

(sfx of window closing and distant sounds getting quieter)

Nathan: You know, when I was a kid, I just had so much fun. I had the best time and I want to be able to give that to someone. I want to build a family, and I want to do it with you, Mill. I love you.

Millie: I love you too, you know that. But look at it from my perspective, okay? I’d be the one sacrificing my body, not to mention my mental health with all those hormones, and I didn’t have the happiest childhood. I didn’t have it like you, so it scares me that I could be responsible for something awful happening to a child that never asked to be born. Does that make any sense?

Nathan: It makes perfect sense. I just know you would be an amazing mother, and together we could have this beautiful life, you know? You deserve that, we both do. And as for your body and mind, I will be here every step of the way, okay? Anything you need.

Millie: That’s not the issue. I know you’d be amazing. It’s more the intensity of it all. The bigness, the seriousness, you know? I’m not good with that stuff.

Nathan: Well, I can help you. I want to help you.

Millie: I don’t know how you put up with me honestly.

Nathan: Stop, don’t say that.

Millie: This is your exit over here.

(sfx of the car signaling to switch lanes)

Millie: Can we just put this conversation on the back burner for now? Let’s just enjoy the day and put the fight behind us, okay? Let me keep thinking about everything.

Nathan: Okay

Millie: I want to be with you, you know that, right? I want to make you happy. I just get scared about life and it makes me want to hide away in a cave and never come out.

Nathan: I get it. Just think about it, that’s all. Just keep thinking about it.

Millie: Don’t worry, I will. In fact, all I do is think. About everything. Too much. All of the time.

Nathan: Well, we’re going to be there in like 20 minutes, should we stop to pick up some wine?

Millie: Yea, looks like there’s a liquor store up ahead so just pull in there.

Nathan: Alright.

(sfx of the car signaling and pulling into a parking lot)

Nathan: I love you, beautiful.

Millie: I love you, too.

(sfx of car shutting off and door opening and closing shut)

INT. AIRPLANE- DAY

On a crowded airplane, squished into the middle of a 5-seat row, sits PAT- a worn out, 35 year old with a mess of brown hair framing her face.

Pat stares straight ahead, eyes wide open, as the ELDERLY MAN to her right rests his head on her shoulder in a deep sleep. She looks over to see him smacking his lips together and settling his mouth into a large gape.

She turns her head to see the STEWARDESS taking drink orders, and as she is about to place her order, the stewardess darts down the aisle without looking back.

Pat lets out a breathy sigh and tries to adjust in her seat without disrupting the elderly man. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.

Just then, her seat jerks forward and she clenches her teeth. After a few more blows to the back of her seat, Pat turns around to see a TODDLER slobbering on a huge lollipop while using the back of her seat as a karate kicking bag. The toddler sticks his tongue out at Pat, who gasps and then looks over to the TODDLER’S MOTHER, who is holding tissues to her nose as she reads some Nicholas Sparks novel.

Pat rolls her eyes and glances back at the toddler, sticking her tongue out at him. As she turns back around in her seat, Pat hears the toddler burst into tears and she scrunches her face, sinking down in her seat.

The elderly man has sunken in his seat, his head on the armrest between his seat and Pat’s. Pat looks at him with her head tilted to the side, and she puts a pillow behind his neck.

As Pat settles into her seat, the stewardess comes by and hands Pat a glass of water and a napkin. Pat smiles at the stewardess and mouths "Thanks". She sip on her water and unravels her napkin to see two capsules of Benadryl.

Pat looks up and glances around the plane. She smiles and pops the Benadryl without hesitation. Pat puts on her sleeping mask and adjusts in her seat, falling asleep.

INT. AIRPLANE- CONTINUED

Pat is seen sleeping with a smile spread across her face. The toddler emerges from behind her and spits his gum in her hair. He laughs as his mother pulls him back into his seat, without taking her eyes away from her book.
